Barkingside is in the top north west corner of Greater London, a small suburb near the larger towns of Woodford and Loughton.
This corner of London – once Essex, now the Borough of Redbridge – is where the city meets the country, with an almost rural feel in parts, surrounded by nature and near to lovely Epping Forest.
Fairlop Waters Country Park (Forest Road, www.fairlopwaters.info) is in Barkingside and has lots to do, with a lake for sailing and windsurfing, boats for hire, and angling lake and two nice golf courses, one 18 hole, and one 9-hole par 3 course plus a driving range – both are pay-and-play.
You’re not far from Romford, a major urban town with lots of shopping: the Liberty (Market Place, www.theliberty.co.uk) has over 100 high street names. Romford Greyhound Stadium (London Road, 01708 762 345, www.romfordgreyhoundstadium.co.uk) is a great night out with particularly good food and entry deals on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Epping Forest near Woodford is 6,000 acres of ancient woodland with some particularly fun cross country bike tracks and it’s just 35 minutes on the tube to Covent Garden.
Barkingside (Zone 4) is served by the Central Underground line.
