In-between Putney and Kew on the south west bank of the Thames, Barnes is one of the many elegant riverside villages in the vicinity of Richmond.
Barnes Village is a picture of olde England: all present and primly correct are a cricket green, rugby and bowling clubs, duck pond and the Sun Inn (7 Church Road, 020 8876 5256, www.thesuninnbarnes.co.uk), a proper village local with a warm welcome, good food and regular live jazz.
This curve of the River Thames is a prime spot for settling down with a Pimms for the Oxford and Cambridge boat race, the annual pull down the Thames from Putney to Mortlake featuring crews from Britain’s premier universities slugging it out for bragging rights – it’s a famous event.
Glam rock legend Marc Bolan died in a car crash on Queen’s Road Barnes in 1977, and a candle and small shrine marks the tragic spot.
A popular music attraction is the Olympic Studios on Church Road in Barnes. The studios have played host to many of musics icons including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin to The Verve, Massive Attack, Duran Duran, Coldplay, Madonna, and Will Young.
The Bull’s Head (373 Lonsdale Road, 020 8876 5241, www.thebullshead.com) is one of the capital’s best music pubs, a down-to-earth boozer synonymous with jazz since 1959 with a litany of big names in its illustrious history.
You’re also close to ever-popular Kew Gardens (Kew Road, Richmond, 020 8332 5655, www.kew.org), delightful Richmond, and there’s some outstanding local restaurants here too.
There’s two stations, Barnes and Barnes Bridge, both connecting to Waterloo.
