Our mystery inspector stayed at the Base2stay in a single room (L18) for 2 nights. Location - Excellent - just a few minutes walk to Gloucester Road and only 4 minutes from a 24 hour Sainsbury Store. This area has always been my preferred London area to stay, its so civilised in comparison to the West End. Road noise - mimimal, its on a quiet road opposite a small grassy square Hotel Condition - top quality. All is new and well maintained. Staff - Reception staff helpful but unobtrusive. However, housekeeping is slow, they made up my room mid afternoon and then phoned me an hour later when I had put the do not disturb sign on the door to ask if I wanted my room cleaning despite the fact they had already done it. Room - well equipped but very small indeed even by London standards. It is OK for maybe 2 nights but no more. Walk in shower was fantastic. Cleanliness - 9/10 - slight dust traces on fittings was my only observation. Upside Comments - clean, quiet, secure, modern, good location, well priced and free internet via TV Downside comments - the mattress was one of the worst I have ever slept on and I woke up aching both days. If you press the top edge down it meets the bottom edge. This is not an exageration it was aweful. The meagre coffee and tea provision was not replenished. The a/c vent blows directly down onto you in bed. Would I stay there again - no because of the mattress quality but if this very important aspect was remedied I think its a great choice for a short stay. In that immediate area and at around the same price point, I think I would prefer the Montana Hotel for the most comfortable bed and the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum or Derby Hotel for the room size.
