Carew Manor

A small township located one mile west of Croydon in south London, Beddington is on the fringes of Greater London and lies around ten miles directly south of Central London.

This settlement dates back over a thousand years and has two main claims to fame: Sir Walter Raleigh secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, a lady of the local Carew Manor, falling out with his favourite Queen Elizabeth and spending time in the Tower of London for his ‘crime’ – the story goes than when Raleigh was later beheaded by James I, his wife kept the great explorer’s severed head in a bag for the rest of her life.

Archaeologists have recently discovered a forgotten Tudor garden including a grotto at Carew Manor.  This is believed to have been created by Sir Francis Carew in the 1500's. The precise location is not being disclosed in order to protect it from looting.

Fast forward 400 years, and the BedZED (www.zedfactory.com) sustainable housing project, a 99-home development built by Bill Dunster and powered solely by renewable energy is in Beddington, a possible glimpse into the future of UK housing.

It’s a very quiet place, but neighbour Croydon has much to offer: major shopping in the Whitgift Centre (www.thewhitgiftcroydon.co.uk) Centrale mall (www.centrale.co.uk) and around the high street; and three excellent theatres - Fairfield Halls (Park Lane, 020 8688 9291, www.fairfield.co.uk) for touring West End shows, music and comedy, the Warehouse Theatre (Dingwall Road, 020 8680 4060) for new writing and Croydon Clocktower (Katharine Street, 020 8253 1030, www.croydonclocktower.org.uk) for art-house films, plus a wide range of bars and restaurants.

Waddon is the nearest rail station connecting to Victoria, and there’s a tram link to East Croydon, a major interchange for Central London and the south east coast.
