Belsize Park Station

Balanced on the map between the eternal cool of Camden and the exclusive, artsy village life of Hampstead with two of the capital’s best green spaces in-between, it’s easy to see why the elegant streets of Belsize Park, Primrose Hill and Swiss Cottage are such a magnet.

Belsize Park is between Chalk Farm and Hampstead on the Northern Line, and within a square mile of the tube station you’ll find great arts venues, enough gorgeous eateries and cafes to fill a full culinary week, the wild, windswept beauty of Hampstead Heath and the London abodes of a whole gossip magazine-full of celebrities – Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin, and Tim Burton & Helena Bonham-Carter are just two of the starry couples who call Belsize Park home, and bad girl Kate Moss’s late-night activities are the thing of local legend. It is a lively area and there are many restaurants, pubs and cafés along Haverstock Hill and also England's Lane

In World War 2, one of the largest underground air-raid shelters in London was built here and can be seen near the tube station at Downside Crescent

The tube drops you off at Haverstock Hill, resplendent with bars and restaurants, the best of which is The Sir Richard Steele (97 Haverstock Hill, 020 7483 1261), a rambling pub filled with questionable antiques and genuine rock stars.

Heading south from Belsize Park leads you into Camden via Chalk Farm: though the market’s not what it was, it’s still the heart of alternative London with live bands in most bars ranging from the brilliant to the abominable, and always thronged with the capital’s coolest people.

The Roundhouse (2 Chalk Farm Road, 020 7424 9991) is a remarkable performance space, hosting stunning large scale theatre and circus pieces as well as ground-breaking musical acts in a uniquely atmospheric setting.

North of Belsize Park is Hampstead, a well-heeled literary neighbourhood filled with quaintness and the vast expanse of Hampstead Heath, where you can lose yourself amongst the moorland or gaze at breathtaking views of t he city from Parliament Hill.
