Koko (1a Camden High Street, 0870 432 5527, www.koko.uk.com) is a gorgeous old theatre transformed into a glittering palace of indie clubbing: Coldplay, Prince and Pete Docherty’s Babyshambles were recent live guests, and the Jazz Café (5 Parkway, 0870 060 3777, www.jazzcafe.co.uk) has the best and biggest international names in soul, jazz, r’n’b and hip hop if all those sweaty white boys with guitars get a bit too much.

Elsewhere, Camden’s markets are world-famous: the Lock and Stables markets in particular are crammed with retro fashion, alternative accessories, world food, records, antiques, books, bric-a-brac and everything in-between. You can buy anything from a freshly cooked burrito to a Bob Marley-shaped bong, and there’s countless atmospheric cafes, bars and restaurants around to whet your whistle.
