Clapham Common

One of south London’s most fashionable neighbourhoods in recent years, resurgent Clapham is centred around the famous Common, a large, peaceful green space with good fishing, Australian rules football, and a carnival atmosphere around the city’s annual Gay Pride celebrations.

it’s name dating back to an age when Battersea was such a slum that nobody dared visit. The Old Town centred around North Street is the more genteel area of Clapham, with a charm all of its own.

You’ll find interesting small shops, great eating and drinking establishments like the Grafton House (13-19 Clapham Old Town, 020 7498 5559) and Trinity (4 The Polygon, 020 7622 1199) – voted Time Out’s best local restaurant 2007 – and local institution Benny’s (30 North Street, 020 7622 5686), a traditional chip shop with a sideline in DVD rentals and a wall of celebrity customer’s photos - including Michael Jackson.

Clapham High Street is nightlife central, dominated by sleek, chic DJ bars; it’s buzzing Thursday to Sunday with party people from all over London. Check out cool-hunter’s favourite The Alexandria (14 Clapham Common South Side, 020 7627 5102) and Bierodrome (44-48 Clapham High Street, 020 7220 1118), part of the Belgo chain with its famous moules & frites and lavish range of Belgian beers.

Clapham’s only 20 minutes from town, and is just a short hop from Brixton for markets, live bands and even wilder nightlife, and the quieter outer suburbs of south London and Surrey.

There’s three Northern Line Underground stations for each individual district: Clapham North on the boundary of Stockwell, Clapham Common for the bars and villagey atmosphere of the Old Town, and Clapham South, next to Balham. There’s also an overground station at Clapham High Street, but don’t be fooled into taking the train to Clapham Junction – it’s actually in Battersea
