This area borders South Kensington on the eastern side and in general terms, the closer to this border the more upmarket the hotel. The area around Hogarth Road and Barkston Gardens may as well be South Kensington except for the postcode.

Earls Court Guide

On the fringes of Kensington & Chelsea and therefore nowadays quite well-to-do, Earls Court has a reputation as a traveller’s magnet.

So many Australians and Kiwis arrived in Earls Court to sample a bit of swinging Chelsea 60s that the area gained the title ‘Kangaroo Alley’, and there’s still an Antipodean vibe, though not as much as nearby Shepherds Bush.

It’s also been known as the ‘Polish Corridor’ and ‘Saudi Ken’, during periods of popularity with visitors from the freezing steppes of eastern Europe and monied Arabian businessmen.

It’s still a rich mix, though the atmosphere’s more a cooler, smaller version of Chelsea: upmarket homes stand alongside a world of culinary delights in the quality restaurants and cafes that dot the streets.

The two big draws are Earls Court events centre and nearby Kensington Olympia (020 7385 1200, www.6+): though somewhat put out of joint by the gleaming, brand new ExCeL Centre in Docklands, they’re still major venues with exhibitions on everything from cattle to computers, and Earl’s Court is renowned for gigs by rock monoliths – legendary shows by Led Zeppelin, Queen and Pink Floyd make it a favourite for newly-minted UK groups eager to write their own pages in history.

The Troubadour (263-267 Old Brompton Road, 020 7370 1434, www.troubadour.co.uk) is a funky basement folk club has an equally grand histo ry, a favourite of Bob Dylan and Hendrix back in the day. Now there’s acoustic acts and a superbly bohemian restaurant attached.

Also check out nearby Balans West (239 Old Brompton Road, 0871 971 4994), sister of the Soho classic and with the best breakfasts for miles around. The Finborough Theatre (118 Finborough Road, 020 7373 3842, www.finboroughtheatre.co.uk) is a crampt and exciting fringe theatre where you can see big stars for a quarter of the price of the West End: it’s one of the city’s best small venues.

Earls Court tube station (District & Piccadilly lines) has direct links to London Heathrow Airport and into central London.
