Enid Blyton Blue Plaque on Lordship lane

East Dulwich, buoyed by a massive influx of trendy young families in recent years, this corner of south east London has a genuine neighbourhood feel with friendly folk, local retailers and lots of greenery.

Of the three faces of DulwichDulwich Village is a country town in all including its name, and North Dulwich close to Brixton has a bit more of a metropolitan vibe – East Dulwich is the cool end, with livelier bars and a bohemian presence to go with the yummy mummies.

Lordship Lane and Northcross Road are where you’ll spend your days and nights, with an abundance of independent bakers, funky cafes, artsy shops, small galleries and gastropubs. Blue Mountain Coffee Shop (18 Northcross Road, 020 8299 6953, www.bluemo.co.uk) is a local institution, voted LBC Café of the Year in 2006 and a friendly hangout with reliably potent java. Grace and Favour (35 Northcross Road) is one of many quirky giftshops keeping the bright young things of Dulwich in unusual curios, and there’s a clutch of good fashion boutiques along Lordship Lane.

There’s a world of dining options, from ubiquitous gastropubs to the excellent Thai Corner Café (44 Northcross Road, 020 8299 4041), serving a budget menu of brilliant Thai food and best of all, you can bring your own bottle.

East Dulwich has an outstanding drinking scene, with fashionable joints all around: there’s few bars more chic than Black Cherry (21 Lordship Lane, 0208 299 8877) for cocktails, and everybody loves The Bishop (27 Lordship Lane, 020 8693 3994) with its mish-mash of eclectic décor and furniture, similarly catholic music tastes, and resident pub dog Clarence.

Served by East Dulwich railway station, it’s a twenty minute ride to central London and there’s other stations in North and West Dulwich.
