Finsbury Park
A bit of a madhouse but not without its charms, Finsbury Park is one of north London’s main transport interchanges.
Diversity is the name of the game around Finsbury Park: the Seven Sisters, Blackstock and Stroud Green Roads and surrounding districts are home to one of London’s widest ethnic melting pots, with Polish delis beside Afro-Caribbean hairdressers, Cypriot bakeries next door to Middle-Eastern shisha bars.
The Finsbury Park mosque became notorious under the stewardship of Imam Abu Hamza al-Mazri as a hotbed of Islamic extremism in this area of ‘Londonistan’; reclaimed and renamed the North London Central Mosque by mainstream clerics in 2005, it’s now a peaceful place of worship for the significant local Muslim population (7-11 St Thomas, 020 7424 5252,www.nlcentralmosque.com).
The park itself is a large green lung often home to concerts and festivals, though exercise some caution after dark; Manor House on the other side of Finsbury Park is the Greek, Turkish and Cypriot district, with outstanding kebab houses, bakeries and a unique atmosphere. Blackstock Road famously led to Highbury football ground; now luxury flats, Arsenal – span>the prettiest of London’s Premier League teams sh; play their home games in the nearb y Emirates Stadium (75 Drayton Park, www.arsenal.com), a stunning feat of sporting architecture. Tickets are notoriously expensive, which doesn’t put off the 67,000-strong faithful – unless it’s a Carling Cup or friendly match, you’ll be lucky to get your hands on one.
Nearby Crouch End has great bars and restaurants, or there’s Finsbury Park’s own semi-legendary Faltering Fullback (19 Perth Road, 0871 984 1439): lively, laid-back, and distinctly alternative.
Served by the Piccadilly and Victoria Underground lines as well as overground services from the commuter towns of outer north London, it’s ten minutes to King’s Cross and tubes connect to Tottenham (Victoria) and Wood Green and beyond (Piccadilly).
