“Travelling faster than an Arab cycling through Golders Green” goes the famous Goon Show punchline, and this sought-after area of north west London has all the atmosphere of a Little Israel-on-the-Thames.
Home to a prominent Hasidic Jewish community since 1900 and with numerous Greek Orthodox and Japanese residents, Golders Green is very continentally flavoured: Finchley Road and Golders Green Road are rife with pavement cafes, kosher eateries and late night bagel joints, the recent influx of chain cafes not distracting from the Middle Eastern vibe. Blooms (130 Golders Green Road, 0871 963 3080), with its massive mural of Moses leading the children of Israel, is one of the area’s best restaurants for traditional Ashkenazi food – try the salt beef sandwiches for an authentic experience of Jewish food that you could ever eat. Solly’s (148a Golders Green Road, 020 8455 2121) offers much the same, with traditional kosher eating and a gorgeous sun terrace. The Grade II-listed Golders Green Synagogue (Dunstan Road, 020 8455 2460, www.goldersgreensynagogue.co.uk) is a historical place of worship, once led by Britain’s Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks.
A local tourist attraction of sorts is Golders Green Crematorium on Hoop Lane off Finchley Road, an Italianate building with peaceful remembrance gardens and the final resting place of Peter Sellers, Marc Bolan and Sigmund Freud, amongst many others.
Café Japan (626 Finchley Road, 020 8455 6854, www.cafejapan.co.uk) is an outstanding and unfussy sushi eaterie, one of many excellent Oriental restaurants scattered around Golders Green – bear in mind that there’s few pubs in the area, as it’s more of a café kind of place. It’s also just a short walk down North End Road to Hampstead Heath, one of London’s most natura l green spaces.
Golders Green Underground station is in Zone 3 on the Northern Line’s Edgeware branch.
