Harrow-on-the-Hill

A significant suburban town located in deepest north west London, Harrow is on the outer fringes of greater London.

Really a collection of villagey mini-suburbs like the very English Pinner and Harrow-on-the-Hill, central Harrow is a bit more metropolitan with a modern town centre all of its own.

As a fully functioning urban centre of its own, you won’t need to head into town for entertainment: there’s a big Vue cineplex (St George’s Square, 08712 240240, www.warnervillage.co.uk) for major movie releases and Harrow also sports a dedicated Bollywood filmhouse, the Safari Cinema (Station Road, 020 8426 0303, www.safaricinema.com) serving the area’s prominent Asian population with the newest hits from India for as little as £4 a ticket.

There are two big malls in central Harrow for high street names, and the surrounding towns have many interesting specialist shops.

Central Harrow also has a proliferation of drinking establishments, though for proper neighbourhood character, head to the Queen’s Head (31 High Street, 020 8868 4607) in Pinner for handmade, homely food and genuine Tudor stylings – incredibly there’s been an alehouse on this spot for over 700 years – good ale and a Sunday farmer’s market.

Harrow is perhaps best known for its terribly posh public school, founded in 1572 and still the countrys most elite boys school along with its great rival Eton. Old Harrovians include Byron, James Blunt and seven British Prime Ministers including the greatest Briton of them all, Winston Churchill.

The Metropolitan, Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines stretch out to this Zone 5 location, with various stations at North, South and West Harrow, Harrow-on-the-Hill and Harrow & Wealdstone, as well as convenient stops at Rayners Lane and Northol t Park. There’s also plenty overground connections to central London from Harrow & Wealdstone.
