Highbury is a magnet for creative types, and melds seamlessly into the Angel area of Islington, probably the centre of north Londons cultural life.

Indeed, the local Underground is called Highbury & Islington (Victoria Line Zone 2) with Arsenal (Piccadilly Line) and Drayton Park overground on the way to the transport hub of Finsbury Park, and to the south, Upper Street leads you to Angel in 15 minutes. And unless you’re visiting Highbury’s most famous residents – Arsenal Football Club, who left homely old Highbury stadium in 2006 for the magnificent and usually fully sold out Emirates Stadium (75 Drayton Park, www.arsenal.com) – around Upper Street is where you’ll spend most of your time.

It’s increasingly upmarket and genuinely buzzing with artistic energy, individual late-night bars, quirky stores and cultural venues.

The Hen & Chickens (109 St Paul’s Road, 020 7354 8246) is a sociable boozer with an intimate upstairs theatre: visit in July for fantastic Edinburgh previews from some of comedy’s biggest names as they road-test material for a month in Auld Reekie.

Another home of thespianism in the area is the Kings Head (115 Upper Street, 020 7226 1916 with a gorgeous Victorian interior, cutting-edge fringe shows in the backroom theatre and dancefloor-friendly live bands most nights until late: and the reason why the clientele look like young stars of stage and screen is because they most probably are.

The Buffalo Bar (259 Upper Street, 020 7359 6191) and the historical Hope & Anchor (207 Upper Street, 020 7354 1312) are where you’ll catch hot new indie bands, and Slim Jims Liquor Store (112 Upper Street, 020 7354 4364) is an LA-style whiskey bar where you can live out your Guns ‘n’ Roses fantasies.

It’s one of London’s main restaurant thoroughfares and there’s a dizzying amount of choice: Rodizio Rico Islington (77 Upper Street, 020 7354 1076) for all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ munching and hearty, friendly pizzeria La Porchetta (141-144 Upper Street, 0 20 7288 2488) come recommended, but you really can’t go far wrong.

There are several tube and rail stations in the area of Highbury, these include Arsenal tube station, Canonbury railway station, Drayton Park railway station, Finsbury Park Station, Holloway Road tube station and  Highbury & Islington station.
