Bankside - this is a Hotel Assist page guide about Bankside and hotels that can be located in this area of London. Keywords: Bankside, OXO Tower, London Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Tate Modern gallery, Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, Anchor pub, Clink Street, Clink Prison, Golden Hinde BANKSIDE - south of the riverOn the riverbank between the OXO Tower and London Bridge is Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, where the theatregoer can experience plays as the Elizabethans did; standing in the open air. This is in fact a modern reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre where Shakespeare's plays were performed and which stood on a site nearby until it burned down in 1613. The new Globe was opened in 1997 and, with the only thatched roof in London, it is faithful to the design of the original, right down to the policy of making theatre accessible to the masses, with places available for all performances for as little as five pounds. Unmissable, if only for its size, is the Tate Modern gallery. Housed in a vast former power station and with no entrance fee Tate Modern claims to be the world's most visited gallery and has the feel of a theme-park dedicated to art. The building also has some of the best views of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral on the opposite side of the River. And, of course, it is home to a truly world-class permanent collection of art. Near Borough Market, between Southwark Cathedral and the popular Anchor pub, is clink street, site of the infamous Clink Prison. Supposedly taking its name from the clinking sound of prisoners' chains the prison first operated in the Twelfth Century as prison for heretics, later it was infamous as a debtors' prison but was destroyed in a riot in 1780. There is now a museum on the site of the original prison. At the end of Clink Street nearest the Cathedral at St Mary Overie's Dock is a full-size replica of The Golden Hinde, the galleon in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world between 1577 and 1580. The replica, launched in 1973 has been used to recreate Drake's round the world voyage. © Hotel Assist. Hotels near Bankside
