Hotels near to Borough market are not so common and you may have to stay in a neighbouring area and travel into it. This is not a problem with the tube system which can be taken to London Bridge Station from which Borough Market is only 150m to the west.

Paying a visit to Borough Market is like stepping through a time warp back into Dickensian London. Nestled in behind Southwark Cathedral and underneath a series of railway bridges the food retail market, which operates on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, sells some of the finest fresh food available in the country. On non market days a wholesale market operates every morning and a variety of food stalls stay open all week.

The area around Borough has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and there has been a market at the Southern end of London Bridge since at least as far back as the year 1276. During the middle ages this area was outside of the control of the City of London authorities and became something of a haven for rogue traders. By 1754 the market caused so much trouble for the traffic on London Bridge that it was shut down by an Act of Parliament, the market then resumed business on its present site around two years later.

During the Nineteenth Century the market's advantageous position near the Thames' riverside wharfs saw it grow ever larger. Today there is nowhere else in the city where you will see whole venison on sale, braces of hares, speciality sausages and fresh dairy produce alongside all manner of sea food including whole tuna and lobsters. A plethora of tempting free samples of food are offered by the stall-holders to tempt the visitor into buying.

Around the edge of the market is a pleasant array of shops, Monmouth Coffee is worth a visit for its laid back inviting atmosphere and one of the best cups of coffee anywhere in town and there are various traditional pubs offering refreshment. "Roast", the well known restaurant and subject of recent television programs is located at Borough market.

Across Borough High Street is the site of The Tabard pub which features as the pilgrims' first meeting place in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, written in the Fourteenth Century and widely considered as being one of the most important works in early English Literature. The Tabard itself was destroyed in a fire in 1676, but its neighbour, The George Inn still stands. This establishment dates back to medieval times and was visited by both Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.

Borough Market is situated near to London Bridge Station which is well connected to the mainline National Rail network and the Tube (Northern Line). There are also many Bus Routes serving the area, including: 21, 35, 40, 133, 343, 381, RV1. for those driving to Borough market, free car parking is available next to Jubilee Market but it fills up very fast so arrive early. There is a secure pay car park on the junction of Southwark Street and Southwark Bridge Road.

If you are visiting this part of London known as Bankside, then you should also visit The Golden Hinde, Southwark Cathedral, Clink Prison, The Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern. The London Eye is only a pleasant 2km walk along the River Thames.
