Tate Modern - this is a Hotel Assist page guide about Tate Modern and hotels that can be located in this area of South London. Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG Opening Times: Keywords: Tate Modern, Bankside, Southbank, hotels Hotels near to the tate Modern are not so common and you may have to stay in a neighbouring area and travel into it. This is not a problem with the tube system. Southwark (Jubilee Line) and Blackfriars (District and Circle Lines) are both within a 10 minute flat walk away. The monolithic ziggurat of the former Bankside Power Station was reopened in the year 2000 as Britain's largest museum of modern art. The original structure was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in stages between 1947 and 1963. When the power station was converted into the Tate Modern gallery the vast turbine hall was kept as one space, and each year a different artist is commissioned to fill this unique space, often with a single showstopping work of art. Level four of the gallery is mostly used for temporary exhibitions, for which there is usually an entrance fee. However, admission to the permanent collection on the other levels of the gallery is free. Tate run four publicly funded galleries in the UK dedicated to modern art, the original gallery still stands at Millbank on the site of the Old Millbank Prison, its construction was paid for by 19th Century sugar merchant Henry Tate, who gave his name to the gallery. Tate Modern has a remit to display art produced since 1900 and has distinguished itself with daring curatorial policies, works being grouped according to their style and content rather than, as is the case in most galleries, in chronological order. The gallery also contains the usual gift shops and cafes as well as a members' café up on level 7. Tate Modern offers stunning views of London, and is one of the best viewpoints from which to see the dome of St Paul's Cathedral on the opposite side of the river. The Millennium Bridge, a footbridge, links Tate Modern with the St Paul's area and the Southbank and London Bridge are both a short walk away via the Thames-side path. The nearest tube stop is at Southwark.
