In the modern age of football where the cost of refurbishing stadiums can only be met by moving into new ones, the long history of Chelsea's Stamford Bridge is something of a rarity. Built on Fulham Road in 1876 and opened a year later, it was designed by the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the man responsible for many other football grounds including Liverpool's Anfield, Manchester United's Old Trafford, Celtic Park and Ibrox in Glasgow and Aston Villa's home ground, Villa Park. It is a curious thing that, although some of Leitch's stadiums have been knocked down and their occupants relocated, many of the grounds that do survive into the modern era are his.

In its early life, Stamford Bridge was the home of the London Athletics Club, where they had moved from the nearby Lille Bridge Ground. It was acquired for the purpose of staging football matches in 1904 and by the 1920s was the second largest sports venue in London. For the three years after the First World War, it hosted the FA Cup Final. At various points throughout the twentieth century Stamford Bridge was extended and rebuilt, fluctuating in capacity, to become the 42,000 seating ground it is today.

The current Chelsea team are riding high. During the eighties and early-nineties, the team were in the doldrums. But after a successful takeover by the Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, they won the Premiership title in two successive seasons, and this season - having already won the league cup -are placed second, and still in the FA cup and Champions' League. The turnaround was not immediate however, and had begun some years before with the appointment of Ruud Gulit as manager in 1996. Gulit instituted a change of playing style which still endures today. It was not until 2004, when Abramovich brought in José Mourinho as manager, however, that the team's new style of play and financial dominance yielded Premiership success.

There is talk of Chelsea leaving the stadium; and the possibility of moving into the London Olympic Stadium has been moved. However Chelsea FC are not the owners of the ground. They are merely permitted use of it by the ground's owners, Chelsea Pitch Owners Plc. Under the terms of this agreement, Chelsea may have to rename the football club if ever they move away from the ground that has been their home since 1905. On the other hand, if Abramovich's spending on the team to date is any indicator, he may have no difficulty buying the pitch owners out of that clause.
