London's East End has blossomed since the days of the Kray brothers, criminals and prostitutes. The East End once stank of breweries, leather tanneries, glue factories and abattoirs, but now it's the new 'it' place in London. The Blind Beggar is a pub where in 1966, gangster Ronnie Kray shot George Cornell in the head three times. It is also said that the pirate, Captain Kidd, was hung right outside the Prospect of Whitby pub. Just as every pub has a story behind it, so does every street name, such as Artillery Lane, Bell Lane, Fashion Street, and Brick Lane. After the great fire of London in 1666 the city was burnt to the ground, so everything had to be rebuilt with bricks. This road became the route for transporting bricks from the factory to London, hence the name. Brick Lane is also the heart of 'Banglatown', home to the highest concentration of curry houses in London. The first curry house in London opened in 1911 in Holborn. By 1960 there were 500 Indian restaurants, and by the millennium this figure had reached 8,000! On the weekend you can visit the renowned Spitalfields Market, held every Sunday. It consists of over 250 fruit and vegetable stalls, and has been a long-standing favourite haunt for local residents, Londoners, tourists, young designer talent and celebrities. The market currently attracts 25,000 visitors per week, and even celebrities such as Madonna, Johnny Depp, Cher, Uma Thurman and Kate Moss supposedly shop here for its diversity. Spitalfields Market has been held on the same site since 1638, when King Charles gave a licence for flesh, fowl and roots to be sold in what was then known as Spittle Fields. Today Spitalfields is going upmarket, with a new shopping complex and apartments being built. One of these exclusive buildings is the White Cube Gallery which opened in 2000. The gallery is housed in a 1920s light industrial building in the heart of the East End.
