An aristocratic town house still standing on the corner of Hyde Park, Apsley House contains the Wellington Museum, and stands almost unchanged since the days of the Iron Duke. Whilst the rest of London has progressed around it Number One, London has remained preserved, and offers a glimpse of Regency London to this very day.
Having defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, moved into Apsley House. It is commonly known as Number One, London, although its address is actually 149 Piccadilly. It stands on Hyde Park Corner, and is a museum and art gallery, open to the public. The house itself was originally built between 1771 and 1778 for the Lord Chancellor, Lord Apsley, and some of the original Robert Adams interiors are still in existence. The Duke of Wellington has the building renovated between 1818 and 1819, but it stands now much as it did when he left it. There is an equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington over the road at Hyde Park Corner, built in 1846, where he watches over his house as time passes.
The house contains one of Londons more spectacular art collections, with pieces by Velasquez and Rubens, as well as an enormous collection of silver and porcelain. The centrepiece of this is the gilt Portuguese dinner service of more than 1,000 pieces which was awarded to the Duke of Wellington by the Portuguese Council of Regency. There are gifts that were given to Wellington by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, King Charles XIV of Sweden, Kaiser Frederick William III of Prussia, Louius XVIII of France, Frederick Augustus of Saxony, and others. The dukes own uniform and other memorabilia can also be seen there. Twilight tours are also conducted in the autumn around the building.
If you wish to get there by overground train, the nearest station is Victoria, about a half-hour walk away. The nearest tube station is Hyde Park Corner, which is just next to Apsley House. It is possible to drive to Apsley House, but the traffic in Central London is often very bad, it can be difficult to park, and you will be liable for the congestion charge.
When at Apsley House, you should see Canovas huge statue of Napoleon as Mars, made between 1802 and 1810, when Napoleon was at the height of his powers. After he was defeated, Wellington had it brought back to his house. Waterloo Gallery also holds many treasures and would be reason enough on its own to visit Apsley House.
Apsley House is both a monument to the victory of the Duke of Wellington over Napoleon, and also a living example of what a Regency metropolitan mansion would have been like, and perhaps the best-preserved of those. Since the 1970s, period furniture, and the Dukes own belongings have been reinstated into Apsley House, so it now stands as one of the few real examples of how the wealthy lived during the Regency. It is a spectacular and important retreat right in the heart of London, and is well worth an afternoon of anyones time.
