ABOUT BOROUGH MARKET:-
Paying a visit to Borough Market is like stepping through a time warp back into Dickensian London. Nestled in behind Southwark Cathedral and underneath a series of railway bridges the food retail market, which operates on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, sells some of the finest fresh food available in the country. On non market days a wholesale market operates every morning and a variety of food stalls stay open all week. Some 70 odd stalls offer some of the best choices of cheese, fresh meats, fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, breads and pastries, all of the highest quality. The area around Borough has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and there has been a market at the Southern end of London Bridge since at least as far back as the year 1276. During the Nineteenth Century the market's advantageous position near the Thames' riverside wharfs saw it grow ever larger. Today there is nowhere else in the city where you will see whole venison on sale, braces of hares, speciality sausages and fresh dairy produce alongside all manner of sea food including whole tuna and lobsters. A plethora of tempting free samples of food are offered by the stall-holders to tempt the visitor into buying. Around the edge of the market is a pleasant array of shops, Monmouth Coffee is worth a visit for its splendid coffees and laid back atmosphere and there are a number of traditional pubs offering refreshment, The George Inn being one of the Oldest "watering holes" in this area of London. The superb restaurant "Roast", which has been hailed on recent television programs is located at Borough market. It is a most pleasant market to browse around, food lover or not. One can pick up snacks or full blown restaurant meals right here on the doorstep.
