The British Museum
The British Museum London is located in the West End in the postal zone of WC1 on Great Russell Street, London. It contains in excess of 8 million pieces the most famous being the Rosetta Stone, the Lewis Chessmen and the Mummy of Katebet.

Worth checking out is the tourist class St Giles Hotel which is less than 5 minutes walk from the British Museum on Tottenham Court Road. From here you can walk to Oxford Street in about five minutes. Within a short walk are Drury Lane, Covent Garden, Soho, Carnaby Street, Regents Street, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, in fact most London attractions. The Dominion Theatre is right next door.
Also close to the British Museum is 4 star Grange Blooms Hotel on Montague Street which backs onto the Museum.
Hotels in Bloomsbury can be quite expensive so if you are prepared to walk for 10 or 15 minutes then consider the hotels in Kings Cross about one mile to the north.
Also within walking distance of the British Museum yet located in Theatreland is the Kingsway Hall Hotel which comes highly recommended. About the British Museum
Founded in 1753 by Act of Parliament, from the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, the British Museum is one of the great museums of the world, showing the works of man from prehistoric to modern times with collections drawn from the whole world. Famous objects include the Rosetta Stone, sculptures from the Parthenon, the Sutton Hoo and Mildenhall treasures and the Portland Vase.
The heiroglyphics and classical sculptures are instantly recognisable and world famous, but more surprising is the workmanship and beauty of the Saxon jewellery collection.
The treasures assembled here from Britain's "Dark Ages" reveal a period of original and brilliant artistry.
There is also a programme of special exhibitions and daily gallery tours, talks and guided tours.
In Dec 2000 the museum's Great Court reopened with a magnificent glass and steel roof by Sir Norman Foster.
