The British Telecom Tower London is located in the Fitzrovia area of London at 60 Cleveland Street W1, close to Goodge Street W1, Tottenham Court Road W1 and Great Portland Street W1.
The British Telecom Tower was constructed in the early 1960's and was officially opened as the Post Office Tower by Prime Minister Harold Wilson in 1964, becoming fully operational in 1965. The tower was built to transmit high speed radio waves and as a telecommunications centre in the heart of London's West End.
The British Telecom Tower stands 175m high, 188m including its main aerial and was the tallest building in Britain until 1981 when the NatWest Tower, now known as Tower 42, was constructed in the City of London. The concrete and glass structure was designed by the Ministry of Public Building and Works architects Eric Bedford and G R Yates and was home to a revolving restaurant until the early 1970's, when it was deemed a national security risk. Occasional broadcasts are made from the top of the British Telecom Tower, including one in February 2006 by BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles.
The British Telecom Tower is located close to many places of interest within the London W1 postcode area, including Marylebone High Street W1, home to a variety of restaurants including Fishworks, which also holds a cooking school at 89 Marylebone High Street W1 (800m west). Regent's Park, home to the world famous London Zoo, is situated 700m north-west of the British Telecom Tower, while the popular British Museum stands 800m south-east.
The British Telecom Tower stands close to the excellent bus and London Underground services of Marylebone Road NW1 and Euston Road NW1. Warren Street Underground Station stands 400m north-east of the British Telecom Tower, providing Northern and Victoria line services to destinations including Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road. Other London Underground stations in close proximity to the British Telecom Tower include Great Portland Street (400m north-west) and Goodge Street (300m south-east).
