About the London Coliseum

London's biggest theatre is the spectacular London Coliseum.  Located on St Martin's Lane in London's West End, it was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1904.  From 1947 the theatre became associated with a succession of American musicals including 'Annie Get Your Gun', 'Guys and Dolls', and 'Bells Are Ringing'.

This magnificent, Italian Renaissance style, historic concert hall is one of the most flamboyant theatres in the West End and is defined as a landmark by the once revolving lavish globe that sits atop the building.  The globe was later fitted with flashing lights to give off the effect that the globe continues to move.  This enormous performance space has a capacity of approximately 2,300 over four levels and was the first theatre in London to have a revolving stage and the first in Europe to be fitted with lifts.

It was utilised as a cinema between 1961 and 1968, before the venue became home to the Sadler's Wells Opera Company after transferring from the Sadler's Wells Theatre.  Then in 1974 the company's name changed to the English National Opera Company (ENO), and the Coliseum is where they have called home to the present day.  Their annual operas are all sung in English with one show in the run sung in its original language.  The annual productions are also occasionally interspersed with performances by the English National Ballet Company.

Extensive renovations took place from 2002 and the theatre reopened in 2004 with 40% more public space and a new air conditioning system.  And that lavish globe atop the theatre is happily revolving once more.

From April 2006, ENO's productions include 'La Belle Hélène', 'Madame Butterfly', 'Orfeo', 'Rigoletto' and 'Sir John In Love'.

For more information on upcoming productions, head to the English National Theatre's website.

Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Embankment underground stations, and Charing Cross rail and underground station are the closest to the Trafalgar Studios at The Whitehall.

However, the best thing to do if you have your heart set on seeing a particular show is to book ahead.  You will be guaranteed a good seat, a great view and a fab night out.
