Situated between Regent Street and the Haymarket on Piccadilly Circus, the Criterion Theatre is located entirely underground, with only the box office at street level, and the auditorium is accessed via beautifully tiled stairways from the footpath above.
This theatre has an entrance that you may pass by if you're not looking for it, but do keep an eye out as it is one of the West Ends more interesting theatres.
Designed by Thomas Verity, the original plan was to build a galleried concert hall including a large restaurant, dining rooms and ballroom. However plans changed mid construction and the space opened as the Criterion Theatre in 1874.
A relatively small theatre seating approximately 590 people, it boasts an almost perfectly preserved Victorian auditorium and with its interior of mirrors and murals of clouds and cherubs, this little theatre makes for a nice escape from the street life above.
Productions housed by the Criterion include 'Run for your Wife' which ran from December 1983 to March 1989, 'My Night with Meg' - an award winning comedy that opened at the Criterion in November 1994 and The Reduced Shakespeare Company performed the 'Complete Works of William Shakespeare' and 'The Complete History of America' between 1996-2005.
The theatre has its own restaurant, 2 bars and is fitted with disabled access. Some of the seating is considered to be restricted viewing, though not uncommon with theatres of this era as pillars are used to support the Dress Circle and Upper Circle.
Piccadilly Circus is the closest underground station and Charing Cross the nearest railway to the Criterion Theatre.
When purchasing tickets for mainstream theatre productions, it is important to keep the following in mind.
The cheapest way to buy tickets is to buy directly from the theatres´ box office where the show is playing. Or, purchase your tickets from the ´Half Price Ticket Booth´ (AKA ´tkts´) located in Leicester Square, where they sell ´on the day´ tickets for all of the West End shows at a discount rate.
The booth is open Monday to Saturday from 10am - 7pm and Sundays from 12pm - 3.30pm. There is a maximum of 4 tickets per person.
Avoid touts hanging about the theatres and any other ticket agencies around the West End that appear a little dodgy as tickets may not be legitimate. You can also purchase a theatre and hotel package which saves money all round. However, the best thing to do if you have your heart set on seeing a particular show is to book ahead. You will be guaranteed a good seat, a great view and a fab night out.
