The Donmar Warehouse is one of Londons smallest theatres, and yet it has proven to be one of the citys most influential in recent years, both under the artistic direction of Sam Mendes, and now of Michael Grandage. Presenting a combination of new work, European classics, and musicals, the Donmar consistently punches way above its weight as a 250-seat venue in Covent Garden.
The Donmar company was founded in 1953 and was named after Donald Albery, the producer who founded it, and Margot Fonteyn, the ballerina and a friend of Alberys. Albery bought the warehouse (not yet then The Warehouse) from a brewery in 1961 and used it as a rehearsal space for Fonteyns London Festival Ballet. The Royal Shakespeare company converted it into a theatre in 1977, and it was used as a workshop and showcase away from the companys work in Stratford.
In 1990 the site was reacquired and refurbished and opened in 1992 under the artistic direction of Sam Mendes, who proceeded to open a number of daring productions, and making it into one of the most exciting venues in a city full of theatre. Michael Grandage, who is now the Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse directed many of the shows later in Mendes tenure, which ended in 2002. Since, under Grandage, the Warehouse has continued to commission new translations of European classics, as well as putting on exciting new musicals and other new works. The Donmars shows have garnered 35 Olivier Awards, 23 Critics Circle Awards, 21 Evening Standard Awards, two South Bank Awards and 20 Tony Awards. It is a little theatre company with a small theatre that produces world-class theatre at every turn.
The Donmar is in the heart of the West End, in Covent Garden, and Covent Garden Underground is the closest tube station. However Leicester Square, Holborn, Charing Cross, and Embankment are all within walking distance. The closest mainline train station is Charing Cross. If you are driving be aware you will incur the congestion charge, although you could take advantage of the Q-Park Theatreland Parking Scheme which allows for 50% off the price of on-street parking for up to 24 hours. The nearest Q-Park car park is in Chinatown.
The Donmar has two bars, and sells confectionery. If you would like to eat then The Ivy is close by, as are all of the culinary delights of Londons Seven Dials. No matter what your tastes or what your budget, there will be something in the roads and alleys around the Donmar to slake your appetite.
The Donmar presents six new productions every year at its Covent Garden venue, but it also tours work nationally and internationally. To see what is currently playing, visit the website. Seating is on benches, and there is nowhere to store coats and bags during a performance, so it might be worth bearing that in mind before bringing all of your possessions with you.
