Edgware Road Station
Lines: Circle, District, Hammersmith, Bakerloo
Edgware Road tube station is in Zone 1 and is unusual for having 2 separate stations serving different lines. One station can be accessed via the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines. The other, located approximately 150 yards away on the opposite side of nearby Marylebone Road, is on the Bakerloo line.
Edgware Road is on the western fringes of the West End in central London and runs from Marble Arch at Hyde Park in the south up to Maida Vale at its northernmost point. The Maida Vale end is known for it's large number of electrical goods shops, including Maplins (186 Edgware Road), KK Electronics (126 Edgware Road) and GF Electrical (11 Bouverie Place) while the area as a whole is the base for London's largest middle eastern community.
The many restaurants in the area provide a great opportunity to sample middle eastern food, including the ornately decorated Maroush Gardens with its lavish interior fishpond (Lebanese cuisine, 1 Connaught Street), Halal Of Marble Arch (Egyptian cuisine, 118 Edgware Road), Slemani (Iraqi cuisine, 130 Edgware Road), Abu Zaad (Syrian cuisine, 128 Edgware Road) and Cheminee Persian Restaurant (Iranian cuisine, 17 Bouverie Place).
Edgware Road is also the site of many shisha cafes where members of the community drink strong Arabic coffee, eat sweet pastries with honey and nuts called Baklava and smoke large "shisha" waterpipes. Since the enforcement of a ban on smoking inside public premises in the UK, smoking now takes place outdoors at tables on the pavement, even in the coldest of weather.
Amongst the cafes where you can try a shisha are Al-Dar Café (65 Edgware Road), Mawal (65a Edgware Road) and Café La Marquise (439 Edgware Road).
Most of the newsagents in the area sell Arabic newspapers and books as well as British ones. There are also a number of Arabic banks as well as various bureaux de change which are useful for tourists.
Many of the areas residents are extremely wealthy and as a result Edgware Road has it's fair share of smart hotels including the Hilton London Metropole (225 Edgware Road). There's also a casino, the Grosvenor Victoria at 150-166 Edgware Road.
Some of the streets off Edgware Road have extremely smart and attractive residential houses and apartments.
You'll also find a number of interesting art galleries including Indar Pasricha Fine Arts (22 Connaught Street) and The Park Gallery (26 Connaught Street).
