Line: Northern, Victoria
Euston tube station is in Zone 1 on the Northern and Victoria lines. It's located underneath Euston mainline railway station from where overground trains depart to locations in the midlands and north west of England including cities like Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool as well as cities farther north like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen in Scotland. The railway station was originally built in 1837 but was demolished and completely rebuilt in a modern style during the 1960's. The station borders the edge of north and central London and is located on Eversholt Street which runs north to Mornington Crescent and Camden Town. It's also close to the busy Euston Road which runs to Kings Cross in one direction and Regents Park in the other.
The area surrounding Euston is not one that's likely to offer much in the way of sightseeing for tourists, and most travellers restrict their activities to using the station as an arrival or departure point. There are many offices for businesses nearby and also a number of housing estates inhabited by poorer Londoners including a large one in neighbouring Somers Town, many of whose inhabitants are Islamic immigrants.
Local attractions include the Bloomsbury Theatre (15 Gordon Street), The Shaw Theatre (100-110 Euston Road), The Place, a contemporary dance school and theatre (17 Dukes Road), The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology containing 80,000 exhibits (Malet Place, located inside University College) and the Wellcome Collection, a museum of medicinal artefacts (183 Euston Road). One of the capital's finest art colleges, the Slade School of Fine Art is also housed in the area (Gower Street).
Shopping in the vicinity of Euston is not particularly memorable and reflects the transitory nature of the area with many people visiting for no other purpose than using the station. In fact the immediate area close to the station on Eversholt Street contains a number of seedy adult video stores and massage parlours as well as a lap dancing club called Secrets (34-38 Eversholt Street).
It's certainly possible to eat out in the area without breaking the bank and amongst the restaurants you'll find are Pasta Plus (62 Eversholt Street) and Prezzo (161 Euston Road), for Italian food, Nando's for Portuguese food located within the station, Woburn Tandoori for Indian food (16 Woburn Walk), Great Nepalese Restaurant for Nepalese food (48 Eversholt Street) and Mai Sushi for Japanese food (36-38 Chalton Street).
