Hotels near to the Gloucester Road tube station are very plentiful and range from 3 to 4 star. A tried and tested favourite is the Montana Hotel which offers tourist class air conditioned rooms. A bonus here is the attached Light of India restaurant which many locals frequent. If you are staying 7 nights then its worthwhile checking if they still have the 7 for 6 offer.
Another hotel still very close to Gloucester Road Tube station is the more upmarket Radisson Edwardian Vanderbilt Hotel. It has it all, attractions, restaurants, bars, shops and Harrods just up the road. The transport links from Gloucester road tube station just across the road are superb and you can even travel direct to London Heathrow Airport without any changes from this station.
A well known hotel close to Gloucester Road Tube is the Millennium Baileys Hotel. This 4 star hotel has stood the test of time. A hotel since 1876 having seen world wars come and go. The timeless elegance still exists today and guests are welcomed by the enchanting decor, relaxing atmosphere and traditionally furnished, comfortable rooms. Throughout the hotel links with the Victorian era are still apparent, the stunning sculptured wrought iron staircase in main reception, the solid wooden floors and cornices, brought to life by true craftsmen.
Gloucester Road tube station is in Zone 1 and can be reached on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines. Located in Kensington, West London, it's older than many tube stations and was first opened as a railway station in 1868.
A disused platform on the station is used for art exhibitions from time to time as part of London Transport's "Art On The Underground" programme. Gloucester Road itself runs up to Palace Gate close to Hyde Park at one end and Old Brompton Road at the other.
It's also close to Cromwell Road which runs from West Kensington at one end to South Kensington at the other.
The area is an upmarket mostly residential one with some enormous and highly impressive properties. It has a literary connection too in that John Mortimer's fictional character Horace Rumpole from Rumpole Of The Bailey was based at nearby Froxbury Court.
Local attractions include the Natural History Museum with its extensive collection of Dinosaur skeletons amongst the many exhibits (Cromwell Road), The Science Museum which boasts a superb collection over five floors including a whole section on space travel (Exhibition Road) plus the Victoria and Albert Museum (named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) featuring 4 million exhibits covering many different aspects of art and design including furniture, textiles, costume, fine art and photography (Cromwell Road).
Admission to the main sections of all 3 museums is free with temporary exhibitions sometimes carrying a charge.
Shopping in the area is varied without the more glitzy type of stores to be found in the West End. The Slightly Foxed Bookshop (123 Gloucester Road) stocks rare and secondhand books.
Gloucester Arcade next to the tube station is a shopping arcade housing a number of fashionable boutiques, jewellers, home interior outlets and food stores.
The Biz Lounge (116 Gloucester Road) provides internet access in a café setting, useful for travellers away from home.
Dining aplenty is to be found here, including Coco Momo (Brasserie style, 25 Gloucester Road), Pasha (Moroccan, 1 Gloucester Road), Black And Blue (American, 105 Gloucester Road), Little India (Indian, 32 Gloucester Road), Ask (Italian, 128d Gloucester Road) and Garfunkel's (American, 128 Gloucester Road).
Local pubs where you can try a good old fashioned pint of English beer include The Stanhope Arms (97 Gloucester Road), The Hereford Arms (127 Gloucester Road), The Prince Regent (25 Gloucester Road) and The Gloucester (34 Gloucester Road).
