Since opening in the summer of 1932, the Open Air Theatre has been presenting much loved summertime theatrical performances from its location within the stunning gardens of Regent's Park. Every year between May and September, Britain's oldest professional outdoor theatre plays host to a summer programme of Shakespeare, musicals, plays, comedy and concerts enjoyed by at least 120,000 people over the 15 week performance period - all of it which has been proudly produced and sponsored since 1962 by the charity organisation, the New Shakespeare Company.
Each summer season includes two Shakespearean plays, a musical and a daytime production specifically created for the kids. Previous productions include the 2003 Olivier Award nominated ´High Society´, the 2006 Olivier Award nominated ´HMS Pinafore´ and the recently created Sunday night concerts and comedy events have included incredible performances by ´The Finn Brothers´ and ´Ronan Keating´ with audiences also enjoying hysterical comedy acts such as Ross Noble and Jimmy Carr.
The enchanting play ´A Midsummer Nights Dream´ is the perfect outdoors production and it is the summer programme's principal production. It is also part of the special ´one night in the season only´ event ´The Midsummer Concert´ - which involves a selected musical group entertaining audiences once a performance of ´A Midsummer Nights Dream´ has finished. The 2006 programme includes jazz music sensation ´The Temperance Seven´.
The performance programme for 2006 includes: Shakespeare's ´The Taming of the Shrew and ´A Midsummer Nights Dream´, the romantic musical ´The Boyfriend´ set in the 1920´s and the children's production is ´Babe, The Sheep Pig´ - a theatrical adaptation of the children's book The Sheep Pig.
Sunday evening comedy performances include: Daniel Kitson, Jimmy Carr and The Comedy Store Players. Sunday evening concert performances include: jazz vocalist ´Clare Teal´, the fabulous folk (but not) singer ´Kate Rusby´ and the sensational British singer/songwriter ´Nerina Pallot´.
In its earlier years, audiences would kick back in deck chairs to enjoy the nightly performances until tiered seating was installed in 1975 to seat 1,240 people. The theatres facilities include a licensed bar and delicious restaurant serving a buffet of homemade food and BBQ option, however you can bring your own picnic that can be enjoyed lolling on the grass or at one of the several picnic tables scattered within the theatres´ grounds.
The summer atmosphere at the Open Air Theatre is just beautiful. As the sun sets, it is the perfect place to relax, sip on a chilled wine, snack on a picnic and enjoy superb entertainment…..all at the same time.
The theatre grounds open 90 minutes before evening performances and 30 minutes before day time shows.
