The current Sadler's Wells theatre is actually the sixth theatre on this site in Clerkenwell within the Borough of Islington, and although its history is a little chequered, it has been a place of entertainment for over 300 years and is one of London's most popular and primary venues for presenting international and national ballet, opera and contemporary dance. The theatre's namesake Richard Sadler opened the first music house here in the 1680's and, along with the discovery of wells on his land containing 'medicinal' water, this is how the name Sadler's Wells came about. By the early 17th century the playhouse was a popular place of entertainment featuring anything from jugglers, ballad-singers, stage fighters, dancing dogs and a singing duck. However due to attracting mildly unsavoury punters, it was once described in 1711 as "a nursery of debauchery"! After a downhill slide, new manager Thomas Rosoman brought opera to the venue resulting in the construction of a new theatre that opened in April 1765. By 1840 the theatre had become known for presenting pantomimes, light opera and variety shows. Samuel Phelps took over management in 1844 turning the venue into..."a theatre as it ought to be - a place justly representing the work of our great dramatic poets"…presenting Shakespeare numerous times over the following years. The theatre went slowly downhill again after Phelps' departure in 1862 and the space was converted into a roller-skating rink, later becoming a prize fight stadium. Thankfully in 1879 the venue reopened as a theatre/music hall, and then in December 1896 it was converted into a cinema becoming only one of three venues in London to present the new craze of cinematography. However by 1915 it had closed again. In 1928, the late, great Lilian Baylis became involved with organising a charity, raising money to reopen Sadler's Wells - and in January 1931 the new Sadler's Wells raised its new curtains with a production of 'Twelfth Night'. The Sadler's Wells Ballet Company and the Sadler's Wells Opera Company were originally formed here and although both companies have since found new homes, Sadler's Wells continued to present diverse international productions. But sadly this wasn't enough to keep the theatre afloat and it was demolished in February 1997. However, with money from the National Lottery funding the construction, the current Sadler's Wells opened in October 1998 with a capacity of 1,500, and it continues to go from strength to strength. For more information on upcoming productions, head to the Sadler's Wells website. Angel underground station on the northern line is the closest to Sadler's Wells Theatre. There is also the Sadler's Wells Express Bus (SWX). This service leaves from outside the theatre 8 minutes after each evening performance finishes, dropping off at Farringdon, Waterloo/Waterloo East then Victoria Station. When purchasing tickets for mainstream theatre productions, it is important to keep the following in mind. The cheapest way to buy tickets is to buy directly from the theatres´ box office where the show is playing. Or, purchase your tickets from the ´Half Price Ticket Booth´ (AKA ´tkts´) located in Leicester Square, where they sell ´on the day´ tickets for most of the West End shows at a discount rate. Avoid touts hanging about the theatres and any other ticket agencies around the West End that appear a little dodgy as tickets may not be legitimate. Always ask if your seat is in a restricted viewing area. You can also purchase a theatre and hotel package which saves money all round.
