The area which Tottenham Court Road crosses is mentioned in the Doomsday book. The owners at the time of Henry III rule 1216 - 1272 was noted as the Dean and Chapter of St.Pauls Cathedral.
In the 15th century a Manor, owned by one William de Tottenhall lay just to the North West where Tottenham Court Road and the Oxford Street junction lies.
We learn the area later became the property of Queen Elizabeth when it was commonly known as Tottenham Court. The next century saw it pass to the Fitzroys who built Fitzroy Square on part of the estate circa 18th century.
