From the outside the building is a decadent Victorian and Edwardian architectural delight, and on the inside it is a maze of decorated halls and corridors with no particular order in which the four floors of exhibitions are displayed, the room numbering is slightly confusing and it is actually very easy to lose your sense of direction, even if you do have map of the floor plan.
BUT, the ´Victoria and Albert Museum´ is quite possibly the finest and grandest museum of applied and decorative art in the world, and you just might end up enjoying the confusion.
Located on Cromwell Road in South Kensington's ´museum-land´, the V & A (as it is commonly known) began its life as the South Kensington Museum with collections gathered by Sir Henry Cole after the Great Exhibition in 1852.
As time went by collections grew and the museum was split in two, forming the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, named in honour of Queen Victoria and consort, Prince Albert who for years levied for the development of educational and artistic institutions, for which the area is renowned.
The galleries and exhibitions are sensational. The ´Architecture´ section houses beautiful Spanish Islamic, East Asian and South Asian works, the ´British Galleries´ art and design collections date between the years 1500 and 1900 and the ´Childhood Collections´ include dolls, toys, games and the history of the ever popular Teddy Bear.
The ´Fashion, Jewellery and Accessories´ gallery is fabulous - with collections ranging from platform shoes to an area where you can try your hand at knitting from 1940´s patterns to learning the ´Secret History of the Corset´ with special exhibitions including the 2006 ´POPAGANDA: The Fashion & Style JC de Castelbajac´ showing designs from the flamboyant French designer.
The V & A also houses several of Raphael's masterpieces and only the country of India itself has a bigger collection then the V & A of traditional Indian art.
The ´Cast Courts´ are two great big, sky-lit halls containing copies of some of the world's most famous plaster sculptures, friezes and tombs with one hall dominated by a full-size replica of Rome's Trajan´s Column and Michelangelo's ´David´ in another.
There are of course plenty more collections to explore including glass, armour, costume, textile, musical instruments, stained glass, ceramics, furniture and photography.
Since November 2001 entry to the V & A has been free, with some of the temporary shows and special exhibitions asking for entry fees; but worth every penny for they are always super impressive.
The V & A is open from 10am daily.
There are various rooms provided for studying and research and the National Art Library is a great public resource centre.

South Kensington underground station is the closest to the V & A with a tiled foot-tunnel leading to the museum, proving a third entrance. There are several bus routes passing by and the museum is a stop for the double-decker tourist hop-on/hop-off bus tours.
Parking is very limited and expensive in the area so you really are best to travel on public transport; however there is metered parking on Exhibition Road.
