ABOUT THE WALLACE COLLECTION
The Wallace Collection is an extensive collection of 18th and 19th century art, displayed in the grand setting of Hertford House on Manchester Square in the north-west of the London W1 postcode area. One of Europe's most extravagant art collections, the Wallace Collection was donated to the British nation in 1897 by Lady Wallace, the widow of Sir Richard Wallace, on condition that the collection would be free for all visitors, which remains the case today. Hertford House also stands on Manchester Street W1, George Street W1 and Spanish Place W1. The Wallace Collection is home to a number of pieces of work from artists including Rembrandt, Rubens and Hals, painter of the famous Laughing Cavalier painting which dates back to 1624 and is displayed as part of the Wallace Collection. Exhibitions on various themes take place at the Wallace Collection, which also has collections of Oriental art, furniture and armour from across the globe. The Wallace Collection has recently been refurbished and is home to a lecture theatre, where many talks, which are open for the public to attend, take place. The Wallace Collection, which is open daily between 10.00am-17.00pm, has an educational department which runs interactive workshops for children daily. The Wallace Restaurant is located in the centre of Hertford House, in a bright interior courtyard. The Wallace Restaurant is open daily (till 23.00pm on Friday and Saturday) serving a wide range of French and European dishes under the guidance of renowned French chef Thierry Laborde.
