Windmill Street is located parallel to Goodge Street on the eastern side of the London area, from Charlotte Street at its western end, leading east into Whitfield Street, next to Tottenham Court Road.
Windmill Street, located in the Fitzrovia area of west London, is thought to be named after a windmill from the manor of Tottenham Court, once located on Charlotte Street.
Windmill Street is situated within walking distance of the popular shopping areas of Oxford Street and Regent Street.
Windmill Street is home to the Fitzroy Tavern, which shares a junction with Charlotte Street. The historic Fitzroy Tavern provides quality food and drinks in a relaxed environment and was often frequented by both Dylan Thomas and George Orwell in the 1940's.
Windmill Street is also home to the New Academy Gallery, located at 34 Windmill Street. The New Academy Gallery holds monthly exhibitions displaying the work of selected artists, with a view to selling work to businesses. The New Academy is open from 10.00am-18.00pm Monday to Friday (till 20.00pm Thursdays) and between 11.00am-17.00pm on Saturdays.
Windmill Street leads into Tottenham Court Road, home to a variety of electrical and home furnishing shops including Heals and Habitat.
The British Museum is located 300m east of the Windmill Street, close to the Myhotel Bloomsbury on Bayley Street WC1.
Another place of interest close to Windmill Street is the Royal Academy of Art's (RADA) Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre, which was redeveloped and opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, situated 350m north-east on Gower Street WC1 and Chenies Street WC1.
Windmill Street lies close to a number of London Underground stations and is close to the many bus services that run along Tottenham Court Road to destinations including Euston and Kings Cross. Goodge Street Underground Station is located 200m north-west of Windmill Street and provides Northern line services to stations such as Charing Cross and Waterloo.
