Sloane Square is located in the Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, to the South Eastern side of the Borough and just North of the River Thames. The nearest underground Station is Sloane Square, both the Circle (yellow line) and District (green line) run through this station giving access to Victoria Station, 1 stop away Eastbound (direct links to Gatwick Airport) and Gloucester Road 1 stop away Westbound (direct link to Heathrow Airport, from these 3 stations one has access to a large area of London’s most popular sightseeing area’s.

The Bronze Venus fountain sitting in the centre of the Square has occupied this site for over half a century now. The fountain was designed by Gilbert Ledward and having been chosen as the winning prize by the Royal Academy in a competition for a fountain, it was unveiled in 1951 and has donned this position ever since. Unfortunately, the statue’s future isn’t quite so certain with the proposed re-vamp of the square but for now, she still adorns the same spot observing the busy comings and goings of all who pass her by on this delightful area of London.

At the same time as the Venus Statue was being unveiled, Sloane Square Station which abuts Sloane Square, had just undergone an extensive 11 year restoration after massive bomb damage in 1940 which unfortunately cost many lives. However after the 11 year gap the station was now being opened again in time for the 1951 Festival of Britain. As part of the restoration a large iron pipe was installed which runs above the station. This pipe has a very important job of transporting the River Westbourne from the Serpentine in Hyde Park down to the nearby River Thames.

On the West side of Sloane Square where the Kings Road finishes is the large Department Store Peter Jones. This elegant store is set over several floors with a rather eye catching circular atrium (particularly lovely at Christmas time when it is decorated up to the roof). Here you can shop for almost anything under the comfort of one roof, perfumes, cosmetics, haberdashery, kitchen utensils, white goods, fashion wear, shoes, hats, bags, television sets, hifi, gym equipment, and so the list goes on. Within the store is a rather lovely cafeteria where you can rest your feet and your wallet for an hour or so and sample one of the delicious lunch’s on the menu together with a nice glass of wine.

Other shops in the immediate vicinity of the square include Cartier & Tiffany fine Jewellery shops, Hugo Boss, Hackett’s, Paul & Joe (Fashion). There are florists, banks, book shops and many others to browse within just a few minutes walk. There are also further shops of all descriptions located off Sloane Square at the end of Kings Road in the Duke of York Square. This new development houses many more shops including furniture shops, boutiques, beauticians, sportswear etc., it is a pedestrianised area offering the window shopper much to browse and maybe even tempt you to treat yourself.
