Camden is London’s pocket of rock ‘n’ roll and Kentish Town, half a mile to the north, is very much a satellite for all the action happening around the famous markets.

If sweaty, guitar-heavy live music’s your thing you’ll be in heaven in these parts - Kentish Town Forum (9-17 Highgate Road, 0844 847 2405, www.kentishtownforum.com) has all the big indie names, and the Bull & Gate (389 Kentish Town Road, 020 8826 5000, www.bullandgate.co.uk) is a punky little boozer famous for breaking new bands: Blur, The Pogues, Suede and Coldplay are amongst the multitude that have served their time here.

Heading into Camden proper, there’s The Barfly (49 Chalk Farm Road, 020 7490 0666, www.barflyclub.com), NME hack’s favourite the Dublin Castle (94 Parkway, 020 7485 1773), the glorious theatre-turned-late night indie club Koko (1a Camden High Street, 0870 432 5527, www.koko.uk.com) and the Jazz Café (5 Parkway, 0870 060 3777, www.jazzcafe.co.uk) – all some of north London’s most exciting music venues.

Camden’s other pulling point is the excitement and adventure of its markets: skip the tacky High Street and get lost in the Lock & Stables markets, alive with vintage fashions, food hawkers, record stalls with turntables to test your purchase, second-hand books, handmade exotic furniture and the overwhelming smell of incense – it’s one of the headiest experiences in London, open and thriving Thurs-Sun.

Round the day off with a beer and a glimpse at the slumming-it indie rock icons in the Hawley Arms (2 Castlehaven Road, 020 7428 5979, www.thehawleyarms.co.uk) or explore the northern end of Kentish Town – a very different experience indeed, winding towards Highgate and the rarefied delights of Hampstead Heath.

One of Britains most well known nudist public baths, Rio's, is in Kentish Town.

Kentish Town has a Northern Line Underground and overground rail station, ten minutes north of central London.
