The Royal Albert Hall can be found on the southern border of Hyde Park overlooking the Albert Memorial in central London. About
This area is steeped in history. Originally developed as a cultural overflow from the city of London, it has been occupied by royalty since William III in 1689. Queen Victoria was brought up in Kensington Palace and of course it was the home of Princes Diana. Queen Victoria opened the Royal Albert Hall in 1871 as a memorial to Prince Albert and since then it has been a leading portal for the performing arts.
The best known performances include the Proms which is an annual 8 week series of daily classical music evenings culminating in the last night which is televised and quite traditional in its content.
Visit
Contrary to what other information sources tell you, the Royal Albert Hall is open to guided tours where you can visit not only the main auditorium but also the Royal Retiring Room and the Royal Box. Tours run every day except Wednesdays from Door 12, from 1030 am until 330 pm but can change according to events in the hall. You can call 0207 838 3105 to check. You can pre book on the same telephone number from 9am until 9pm daily.
Travel
Suitable hotels are mainly concentrated around Gloucester Road tube and South Kensington Tube. From either location you are within a 15 minute easy walk or 5 minutes in a taxi. Bus numbers 9, 10, 52 and 360 all pass the Hall.
Taxi fares are high in London but as a rough guide would be: South Kensington £5 - £6, Hammersmmith £8 - £9, Regents Park area £9 - £12 and from the West End £7 - £10. If yuo are staying in Bayswater, you can walk across Hyde Park in about 15 minutes.
