Little Venice
A lovely, leafy residential area in north west London, Maida Vale is served by the Bakerloo Line, ten minutes from Baker Street.
Though mainly made up of tree-lined streets and big Georgian pads for the wealthy locals, there’s excellent neighbourhood restaurants, cafes and bars dotted around, particularly in Little Venice, the main reason to visit Maida Vale for non-residents.
A legacy of the capital’s Industrial Revolution-era canal networks, the Regent’s Canal runs from Limehouse in the east through Islington, Kings Cross, Camden and past Regent’s Park to Little Venice, by far the most beautiful stretch and truly worthy of its name.
Barges and buskers entertain on the 45-minute walk from Camden Lock to Little Venice; you’ll pass London Zoo en route, ending at the Canal Café Theatre (Bridge House, Delamere Terrace, 020 7289 6054) for some superior pub grub, a boho atmosphere and a chance to see Newsrevue, a regular satirical comedy sketch show with nightly updates and a launching-pad for many of the city’s top comic names.
Maida Vale Studios in Delaware Road are the BBC’s audio studios where everything from audio drama to symphonies and international rock icons record sessions for broadcast on the Beeb’s radio stations.
‘Live At Maida Vale’ has been seen on recordings from most British bands of the last 50 years, from The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to the thousands of left-field artists patronised by the late, great John Peel, a doyenne of BBC radio from 1967 to 2004.
You’re also close to Lords (St John’s Wood, 020 7432 1000, www.lords.org), the branded ‘home of cricket’ and a world-famous venue for England’s summer game, including many international tests, county games, one day and top level Twenty20 showpieces.
