Part of a north London artisan quarter including Crouch End and Highgate, Muswell Hill is beloved by its residents and remains largely undiscovered, due to the absence of a tube stop on its doorstep.
Take the Northern Line to Highgate or Piccadilly Line to Turnpike Lane and connect via a bus, though, and it’s well worth the journey – Muswell and Crouch End are notorious haunts of actors and artsy families, and you’re bound to see a familiar face shopping for groceries or whiling the day away in a local gastro-pub.
As its name suggests, Muswell is perched high atop a hill, and a walk into the local sun-worshipper’s paradise of Alexandra Park offers some of the best views of central London from on high. The steep inclines of the park host one of the most spectacular firework displays in the city around Bonfire Night, and Alexandra Palace (www.alexandrapalace.com), as well as where the BBC first broadcasted from, is home to many big live concerts and exhibitions in its main hall, a popular ice rink and a quaint boating lake.
Muswell Hill proper is a lively, villagey place with many quirky retailers and a wealth of eating and drinking options. The outstanding Art For Art’s Sake (362 Muswell Hill Broadway, 020 8442 0512) is one of many shops selling crafts and artsy curios, as well a great selection of artist’s materials. There’s a classic Art Deco Odeon (Fortis Green Road, 0871 22 44 007, www.odeon.co.uk), top restaurants – try ethical family favourite Giraffe (348 Muswell Hill Broadway, 020 8863 4463, www.giraffe.net) – and the nightlife’s great too. O’Neill’s (87 Muswell Hill Broadway, 020 8883 7382) is a huge chain Irish pub with a fun, young crowd; The Village (258 Muswell Hill Broadway, 020 8884 5943) is always fashionable and very popular, and the dancing continues late into the night over the road at Café Loco (266 Muswell Hill Broadway, 020 8444 3370, afeloco.info" target="_blank">www.cafeloco.info). Beautiful Highgate Woods nearby offer meditative, tranquil respite in this artistic and relaxing corner of north London.
