Colourful, traditional and full of life, Notting Hill’s markets are the big draw here, especially at weekends. Turn right out of Notting Hill Gate tube, right again onto Pembridge Road and follow the crowds turning left onto Portobello Road: this is the main artery of Notting Hill Market, including the treasure trove of delights that is Portobello Road Antiques Market – a centre of serious barter and trade for professionals, and a fantastic experience for browsers.
The section of the market near Notting Hill Gate features a lot of art, ceramics and jewellery as well as antiques; there’s a strip of fresh food sellers including an outstanding German sausage stall in the middle; fashion – often hand-made by cool young marketers – and second-hand clothes take over by the Hammersmith & City Line bridges in the middle, then there’s a ramshackle flea market before you reach the Portuguese Quarter towards Westbourne Park Road.
Between the stalls and the alleys of indoor markets, there’s big-name fashion houses and bars all along the route – to the extent where many feel that Portobello Road, together with the post-Julia Roberts property boom in the area, is over-gentrified nowadays compared to its decadent 60s heyday as seen in Nicholas Roeg’s 1968 movie ‘Performance’, featuring Mick Jagger.
It’s still a great day out, though. Gentrification is a word lost on the revellers who populate the Notting Hill Carnival over a bank holiday in late August: chaotic, intense and raucous, with floats pumping out bass-heavy tunes, hundreds of different corner parties and Rio-style processions, this celebration of Caribbean culture and street sounds is a wild affair indeed, attended by over 1.5 million revellers annually.
Tubes in the area are Notting Hill Gate (Central, District & Circle lines), Westbourne Park (Hammersmith & City line)and Ladbroke Grove (Hammersmith & City line).
