Southbank is of my favourite areas of central london for a day out exploring and the Novotel City South is right in the heart of it. Within a very short distance you can find Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Golden Hinde, Hays Galleria, the Tate Modern and the most famous of them all the London Eye. In the evenings you can walk to the trendy Gabriels Wharf which has some nice eateries frequented by people from all over London. If you like cycling then here you can hire a bicycle from the London Bicycle Tour Company for around 18 pounds a day, they even rent helmets.
Into wine? then visit Vinopolis where you can advance book a very enjoyable 2 hour introduction to wine session, with samples !! Into history? then visit Southwark Cathedral where you can see the excavated foundations. There is lots to do in this area but accessing other areas north of the river is also quite easy, the City of London is 1km away and Covent Garden is 2km distance. The nearest tube station has the Jubilee line which will carry you directly to Oxford Street or Canary Wharf and the Northern line will take you to the City.
The Novotel is very modern and of a good standard with all the bedrooms private, if not strangely designed, bathrooms and fast WiFi. There is a lovely bar open until midnight and a restaurant until 2300. It has also has a rooftop small gym, sauna and steam room.

Being a "foodie", I like the idea of being near to Borough market which is fast becoming a major attraction for locals and tourists alike.

The area around the river is classed as Bankside and over the recent years there has been much residential and commercial development including shops, restaurants and bars, galleries and museums.
