Not refurbished since 1999 the Royal National Hotel is London's largest hotel, sleeping in excess of 3000 guests. The hotel is located just on the edge of Russell Square in WC1, where Bloomsbury meets the West End.
Russell Square, now over two hundred years old, was once owned by the Duke of Bedford. It is said to be London's largest Gardened Square and offers a simple cafe, where you can sip drinks whilst sitting beneath the shade. Largely regarded as the centre point of Bloomsbury, Russell Square is located on the Piccadilly tube line, which offers a direct connection to Heathrow Airport, Knightsbridge, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Kings Cross and Arsenal.
The three star Royal National Hotel offers adequate but dated accommodation and is a popular departure point for sightseeing tours. The hotel offers Single, Double, Twin, Triple and Quad rooms, and can accommodate a maximum of four persons in one room. All guest rooms are ensuite, with private bathrooms and are equipped with television showing limited satellite channels, Tea and Coffee making facilities, Telephone and Radio. The hotels public areas are spacious to cope with the very busy flow of guests. The departure lounge offers a selection of hot and cold drinks, as well as pastries whilst you await your departure time. When you step out of the Royal National into Russell Square, you will notice some awe inspiring architecture. Russell Square itself is lined with art deco hotels, and the South West corner of the square is overlooked from the library of the British Museum. The tall grey tower on the North West side of the square is Senate House, which houses a prices library of rare and antique books for the University of London. If you take a walk down Southampton Row, guests can find a myriad of restaurants and shops, selling all types of cuisine, including British, Italian, Japanese and Chinese. After a short walk of approximately five minutes you will arrive at Holborn, where guests will notice Sicilian Avenue, a small rare shopping precinct, passing Bloomsbury Square which is now over three hundred and sixty years old!
Walking to Tottenham Court Road will take guests approximately fifteen minutes, passing tree lined squares and the British Museum. The British Museum offers free entry to everyone, and displays a fantastic display of human history, spanning the five continents, always of special interest are the Egyptian exhibits with their Mummy collections.
Also within walking distance is the British Library and Kings Cross. Kings Cross station is a stop for the Thameslink Train service, which runs from Bedford via Luton Airport to Central London. Liverpool Street station and the Stansted Express is also very nearby, taking just ten to fifteen minutes to travel to by tube. Gatwick Airport connects direct to Victoria Station, which is just one tube stop to the Piccadilly Line which runs direct to Russell Square. Royal National Hotel guests can take a ten minute tube ride to Bank Station, to connect with the Docklands Light Railway, offering a quick and easy service to Canary Wharf, Greenwich, and the Excel Exhibition Centre.
The Airbus A2 service travels to Russell Square and stops in the Royal National Hotels courtyard, via other West End Hotels. The Airbus service starts at 05:30 from Heathrow Terminal 3, 07:00 from Terminal two and just after Seven O Clock from Heathrow Terminal one. The last departure from Heathrow Airport for this service is 21:15. Journey times can take up to 75 minutes and the average cost is just six pounds per journey.
The Royal National Hotel has an NCP car park beneath the hotel. Large enough to take coaches, the car park offers twenty four hour parking at £16.00 pounds. Car Parking is on a first come first served basis, and there are many other secure public car parks within a minute or two walk from the hotel.
