Shepherds Bush hotels

It’s never been the most fashionable of west London districts but there’s a hell of a lot to see and do in Shepherd’s Bush, bordering Harlesden to the north and Hammersmith to the south.

Not least of all the flagship Westfield Centre (uk.westfield.com/london), at the size of 30 football pitches Europe’s largest urban shopping centre and a genuine masterpiece of modern retail design. There’s 265 stores with the emphasis on the high-end: uniquely, as well as the usual high street names, its residents include the likes of Louis Vuitton, Armani, Hugo Boss, Mulberry, Tiffany and many more top couture names in The Village, a lavishly designed luxury mall. There’s a brand new Vue cinema (www.westfieldcinema.co.uk) and a food court far removed from your usual mall fast food – you’ll find steaks, teppanyaki, mezze, gourmet pies, Mexican market food and even a Michelin-starred chef inside, as well as the Southern Terrace, with 17 restaurants including brilliant Wahaca (020 8749 4517, www.wahaca.co.uk) and a very popular branch of the Gourmet Burger Kitchen (020 8749 1246).

At the other end of the shopping spectrum, Shepherd’s Bush Market opposite the tube is a proper London street experience, with many culinary delights from the vibrant ethnic mix in the area and some bargainous clothes.

Shepherd’s Bush Empire (211 Stockwell Road, www.02shepherdsbushempire.co.uk) has big gigs, often by stadium bands looking for something more intimate. The Bush Hall (310 Uxbridge Road, 020 8222 6955, www.bushhallmusic.co.uk) is another outstanding, wonderfully atmospheric small music venue with the emphasis on Americana.

One of Shepherd’s Bush’s most famous residents is the BBC Television Centre in nearby White City, where many news, light entertainment and drama programmes broadcast from, and the area’s renowned for its Antipodean population – head to the capital’s wildest branch of Aussie chain bar Walkabout (58 Shepherd’s Bush Green, 020 8740 4339, www.walkabout.eu.com) during an Australian rugby match, on Australia Day, or even any Friday night to experience southern hemisphere hospitality at its finest.

Hotel 55 is close to Shepherds Bush and should be considered if you wish to stay in this area of London.

Shepherd’s Bush has many Underground stations: Shepherd’s Bush Market (Hammersmith & City Line), Goldhawk Road (Hammersmith & City), White City (Central) and Wood Lane (Hammersmith & City) for Westfield and Shepherd’s Bush itself (Central).
