St Johns Wood hotels
St Johns Wood High Street

St Johns Wood, largely residential and pretty much of it is listed as protected by English Heritage, it is a wealthy London suburb, green and leafy and borders the west side of Regents Park by Baker Street following neighbouring Maida Vale up the Finchley Road to Hampstead in the north.

All fields and, obviously, woods until the early 19th century, the early town planners of St Johns Wood eschewed terraced houses in favour of Italianate, semi-detached villas making the area a huge hit with authors, craftspeople and merchants seeking a unique rural idyll in the big city.

Though many of the original buildings are now long gone – a legacy of WWII bombing and development – the area retains a real charm, and attracts big spenders from industry and the arts to its upmarket enclave.

At the top of the sightseeing list is surely taking your life in your hands by recreating the procession made famous by John, Paul, George and Ringo on the zebra crossing on Abbey Road (3 Abbey Road, www.abbeyroad.co.uk), home of the iconic 1969 album cover and the studio where The Beatles put all their finest music onto tape.

The recording studio is still very much active, known as one of the UKs best, and as well as hordes of Beatlemaniacs, you might catch a glimpse of a modern-day rock icon. In fact a certain ex-Beatle still has a home here in St.Johns Wood.

Street Cafes and some very good pubs are in abundance in the area of St Johns Wood.  Notably the Duke of York pub  is very central to the area, being close to St Johns Wood High Street. Restaurants and cafes abound and cater to all tastes, from your typical greasy spoon cafe to fine dining at the nearby Oslo Court Restaurant.

Hotels in St Johns Wood are scarce but of notable exception is the Danubius Regents Park, a 4 star hotel with car parking. If you are looking for a hotel near to Lords Cricket Ground; Regents Park; or London Zoo then look no further than the Danubius Hotel London, the hotel is very well positioned for all the above being situated on the North Western Corner of Regents Park.  Ideal for visiting the zoo (www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo) which is positioned on the North Eastern Corner of the park

St Johns Woods other world-famous resident is Lords (St Johns Wood, 020 7432 1000, www.lords.org), its weather vane in the shape of Old Father Time and space-age Media Centre both iconic sights in cricket. England’s second sport has been played here for nigh on 200 years, and ‘the home of cricket’ traditionally hosts the first Test match of the summer as well as county games and Twenty20 showpieces – another legendary bit of cricketing lore, the Ashes, reside in the on-site MCC Museum with a replica of the miniature urn going to whoever wins the bi-annual five-match slugfest between England and Australia.

There’s tube stations at St Johns Wood and Swiss Cottage (both Jubilee) Maida Vale and Warwick Avenue (both Bakerloo), the latter convenient for the gorgeous canal-side café life of Little Venice.
