Neighbouring rough-&-ready Brixton in this diverse and lively part of south London, Stockwell’s very much defined by its immigrant communities.

Brixton next door is the heart of black Britain, where the first emigrants from Kingston, Jamaica arrived in 1948 and a symbolic place in the modern day multi-cultural UK; there’s a real Afro-Caribbean feel to Stockwell too, with the exotic tastes of the old country available in many grocers and cafes. Stockwell’s also home to Little Portugal, a 27,000-strong community of people from Lisbon, Madeira and elsewhere whose cafes, social clubs and bakeries give the area a distinctive Mediterranean feel, especially around South Lambeth Road, scene of some wild celebrations – and commiserations - as the home nation lost out to Greece in the final of the Euro 2004 Championship.

There’s warm welcomes, salt cod and other authentic culinary trappings in O Cantinho de Portugal (137 Stockwell Road, 020 7924 0218, www.ocantinho.com) and Café Maderia (130 Stockwell Road, 020 7737 4785), two of many local seafood restaurants, and Portugal’s answer to Manchester United, FC Porto, have an official supporter’s club with televised matches at 82 Landor Road for football fanatics.

The loungey Royal Albert (43 St Stephen’s Terrace, 020 7840 0777) is the local boozer of choice with good draught beers and all-too-comfy sofas. For nightlife however, make the short trip to buzzing Brixton and bars like the Prince Albert (418 Coldharbour Lane, 020 7274 3771) and the Dogstar (389 Coldharbour Lane, 020 7733 7515) amongst many nightspots providing intense party action until the wee hours; there’s also the 02 Academy Brixton (211 Stockwell Road, www.02academybrixton.co.uk) for outstanding live music.  Plus Brixton’s home to some of London’s most atmospheric street markets with a definite Caribbean flavour.

Stockwell is served by the Victoria and Northern Underground lines, and is in Zone 2.
