Holding a prime location near the exact centre of Mayfair, the Connaught has kept pace with the elegant district for more than a hundred years. A recent painstaking restoration has brought the hotel into a new century without diluting its Victorian character, employing the services of leading experts in period design to maintain its heirloom appeal. Restored and uncovered original features are now complimented by the sympathetic and creative embellishments of today's interior designers.
The hotel opened in 1897 and quickly established a reputation among the elite of Mayfair, later being named after Queen Victoria’s third son, Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught. Amazingly, there have been only six general managers since its opening, carrying their traditional approach to hospitality right up to present days. The hotel's address is on Mount Street, still one of the district's most stunning streets and a big name in the fashion and gallery scenes; the building now sits side by side with the flagship showrooms of Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga, among others. Mayfair extends on all sides, from the shaded paths of Hyde Park to the excitement of Oxford Street, Bond Street, and Piccadilly. The rest of the city is also close at hand with local underground links at Bond Street and Green Park on the Central, Piccadilly, Jubilee, and Victoria lines. The Piccadilly line runs direct to Heathrow Airport in under an hour and Victoria Station's 25 minute Gatwick Express service is only one stop away on the Victoria line. Parking is off-site on nearby streets.
Mount Street is also a centre of fine dining, led by the recently revamped Scott's, the seafood restaurant that defined the 1960s James Bond lifestyle. The Connaught's own restaurant has recently become the Michelin-starred Hélène Darroze at the Connaught, led by one of France's most loved modern chefs. Hélène's creations can also be enjoyed in the less formal bistro setting of Espelette, a conservatory with magnificent views over the Mount Street area. In addition the hotel boasts two bars, both 21st century design gems. Guests can choose to mingle in either the Connaught Bar's glittering update on an original Edwardian interior, or the Coburg Bar's more intimate contemporary lounge.
The revamped rooms strike a balance between the feeling of a grand residence and the feeling of home, interpreted by a design team specialising in period renovations. Their formal simplicity preserves the presence of history while glowing colour palettes and soft furnishings promise welcome comfort. With such a recent renovation each room's technology is exceptionally current, including iPod docking stations, flat screen televisions, personally controlled air conditioning and WiFi internet. Potential guests should note however that pets are not allowed.
