Tufnell Park hotels

Between the bustle of cool Camden and the relaxed greenery of Hampstead village, Tufnell Park is popular with actors, musicians and creative families wanting a quiet retreat close to the action of north London.

It is situated between Kentish Town – the north end of Camden Town with its famous markets and music venues – and the inner city urbanity of the Archway, and Zone 2 Tufnell Park is a mainly residential enclave.

The Lord Palmerston (33 Dartmouth Park Hill, 020 7485 1578, www.geronimo-inns.co.uk) is a cracking local gastropub with very high food standards and an easy-going atmosphere, and the Junction Tavern (101 Fortress Road, 020 7485 9400, www.junctiontavern.co.uk), voted North London Pub of the Year in 2009 by traditional pubwatchers CAMRA, is another star choice.

Sadly the local garage rock institution that was the Dirty Water Club recently closed, but you can more than make up for the loss in nearby Camden, probably London’s most musically vibrant area.

Everyone you see knocking back pints in the borough’s wealth of pubs or browsing for vintage fashions in the world-famous markets look like they’re in a band – and they probably are. As well as major venues like the Jazz Café (5 Parkway, 0870 060 3777, www.jazzcafe.co.uk), Koko (1a Camden High Street, 0870 432 5527, www.koko.uk.com) and the Barfly (49 Chalk Farm Road, 020 7490 0666, www.barflyclub.com), there’s dozens of smaller boozers whose back-rooms resound to live music most nights, the Dublin Castle (94 Parkway, 020 7485 1773) being the pick of these.

Head north of Tufnell Park for delightful Highgate and Hampstead Villages, where life slows to a lazy crawl and the range of great restaurants, boutique stores, woody English pubs and the gorgeous Hampstead Heath attract crowds of in-the-know Londoners.

Tufnell Park Station is served by the Northern Line, and there’s overground services to Upper Holloway and Gospel Oak.
