Wimbledon Tennis Hotels

If you are looking for a hotel in London close to the Wimbledon Tennis ground, then (as there are very few hotels in the area and most will be fully booked months in advance) check out Earls Court hotels which is on a direct 15 minute trip by tube to Wimbledon. Southfields Underground station, on the District Line, is the nearest stop to the All England Tennis Club and trains to Southfields run every five to eight minutes from Earls Court station. Shuttle bus services are available from Southfields underground station to the grounds every few minutes.

The lovely suburb of Wimbledon in south west London is world-famous for one reason: as the home of the annual tennis tournament played in June each year, unofficially marking the start of the British summer.

As a wise man once said, “British tennis isn’t a sport; it’s a fortnight”, and Wimbledon sees the normally football-daft nation turn its full attention to SW19, its immaculate grass courts, strawberries and cream and white-only dress code recognised worldwide as a symbol of dignified, sporting Britishness.

One of the four major Open tournaments making up the tennis calendar, Wimbledon (All England Club, 020 8971 2473, www.wimbledon.org) is the world’s oldest tennis tournament with five main events – men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles – and a host of junior competitions spread over nineteen courts and two weeks with blanket TV coverage and a state approaching national emergency whenever a Brit makes it to the quarter-finals.

This is a far from regular occurrence – the last British men’s winner was Fred Perry in 1936, though world number 3 Andy Murray will be a true contender for the next few years. Legends like John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer made their names here, and tickets are appointed by public ballot; you can still queue for very limited tickets on the day though, or soak up the atmosphere on a big screen on ‘Henman Hill’, named after the plucky posh Brit who came so near, yet so far earlier in the decade.

Elsewhere Wimbledon – like the rest of ‘Nappy Valley’ around Wandsworth, Putney, Tooting and Clapham – is a family-friendly place, filled with organic delis, gastropubs and chic boutiques.

Wimbledon Common (www.wpcc.org.uk), as well as a tranquil place for picnics and games, is well-known as the home of the Wombles, the friendly mole-like litter-gathering creatures who probably did more for the cause of recycling during their stint on children’s BBC in the 70s than any government initiative before or since.

 Wimbledon Station in Zone 3 is served by the District Line, rail services and there’s a great local tram service.
